File formats

We can design your files for you from drawings and ideas

It is helpful to provide us with a clear idea of what you want to have CNC routered.

For example:

  • Scale drawings on paper or a CNC compatible file
  • A clear description or concept
  • Some idea of what materials you might like to use
  • Whether you have made the product through other processes before

CNC CAD file, what does it mean?

CNC is an acronym for; Computer Numerically Controlled. This describes how the machine works. The computer delivers a set of instructions to the CNC router, this tells the machine when, where, and how much to move.

The 'CAD' part of a CNC CAD file is an acronym for Computer Aided Design. This means drawing a shape or design on a computer.

CNC CAD files are generated specialised computer software that allows you to design using vector based tools.

Basic CNC CAD files: 2D

The most basic CAD files contain a simple 2 dimensional shape. For example a circle, as pictured on the right.

This type of CNC CAD file provides the CNC machine with a basic line which it can be made to follow.

This type of basic CNC CAD file is a 2D format. The CNC machine is capable of 3D milling, but it can also do simple 2D cutting.

Complex CNC CAD files: 3D

Cutting more 3D CNC CAD files involves all three axis of the machine. The files are cut on the X and Y axis but the Z axis lifts and drops during the movement of the other two axis.

This can achieve some amazing results.

To make this type of CNC CAD file you need specialised software that can design in all three axis planes. You can provide your own designs, or we can make them for you.

We are able to work with you to create any CNC CAD design; 3D or 2D.

What we use
