Te Ahu Kaitaia

Te Ahu in Kaitaia, New Zealand is a multifunctional facility providing modern purpose built spaces for Kaitaia's library, museum, archive, i-Site, cafe and council services. The building also incorporates a community hall, performing arts theatre and cinema.

Story Inc. developed the interior design, exhibition design and museum visitor experience. Human Dynamo Workshop produced two installations from their designs: 'Where Journeys Begin - the flight of the Kuaka' in the main atrium, and The Kauri Tree in the library.

Where Journeys Begin involved making and installing 110 perspex Kuaka (bar-tailed godwits). These hang from the ceiling of the Te Ahu Centre's atrium in a flight formation that mimics the migratory birds annual journey to the northern hemisphere.
